Maastricht University professor Onno van Schayck, professor of Preventive Medicine, noticed on a trip to India that in many slums there poor women cook inside their houses, using mostly wood as fuel. As a result, many women and children are exposed to soot and toxic gases that directly affect their lungs. Complications possibly related to this exposure include pneumonia, COPD and lung cancer.
The “Chimney for every family” project was created to develop of chimneys and stoves that can provide a ventilation system within the houses and consequently improve the air quality of the slums. These chimneys and stoves will be designed in a way that they will fit the budget of the average slum dweller.
